🧳 What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise: 10 Must-Haves You Might Not Expect

🧳 What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise: 10 Must-Haves You Might Not Expect

Planning an Alaska cruise? You’re in for an unforgettable adventure—towering glaciers, breaching whales, cozy towns, and maybe even a bald eagle or two. But if you're used to packing for warm-weather vacations, you might be surprised by what you actually need for this bucket list trip.

Here are my top 10 packing tips to help you stay warm, dry, and ready for adventure on your Alaska cruise:

1. Layers Are Life

Alaska weather is moody. Sunny and 60° one minute, windy and misty the next. The secret? Layer like an onion. Pack base layers, a fleece or puffy jacket, and a waterproof outer shell so you can peel things off or bundle up as needed.

2. Bring a Real Rain Jacket

Even in summer, rain is part of the deal. A lightweight, waterproof rain jacket with a hood will be your best friend—especially during excursions or glacier-viewing days.

3. Waterproof Walking Shoes or Hiking Boots

Whether you're exploring trails, docks, or slippery decks, waterproof shoes are a must. Bonus points if they’re comfy enough for a few miles of walking. Don’t forget extra socks—wet feet = unhappy feet.

4. Binoculars and a Camera with Zoom

Yes, your phone takes great pics—but this is Alaska! From whales in the distance to glacier calving and soaring eagles, binoculars or a zoom lens can make those moments even more magical.

5. A Small Backpack or Daypack

You’ll want something easy to carry during port days—perfect for stashing your jacket, reusable water bottle, sunglasses, or snacks. A foldable backpack is great if you're tight on space.

6. A Swimsuit (No, Really!)

Hot tubs on deck are amazing with a glacier backdrop, and some ships even have indoor pools. If you’re feeling brave, there might even be a polar plunge challenge in port. 🥶

7. Warm Accessories: Hat, Gloves, and Scarf

Even during summer sailings, it can feel downright chilly—especially on glacier days or early mornings on deck. A cozy hat, gloves, and scarf can make a big difference in your comfort.

8. Something for Formal or Theme Nights

Alaska cruises tend to be more laid-back, but most still have at least one formal or dress-up night. Bring a nice outfit or two—you won’t need a tux, just something polished and cruise-photo ready!

9. A Sleep Mask

If you’re cruising between May and August, the sun can stay out really late—and rise early. A sleep mask is a small item that can make a big difference for light sleepers.

10. Ziplocks, Wet Bags & a Laundry Sack

Trust me, these come in handy. Whether it’s muddy shoes, wet clothes from a rainy excursion, or organizing toiletries, a few Ziplocks or reusable bags are worth tossing into your suitcase.

Alaska cruises are stunning—but they’re also full of unexpected weather, active excursions, and packing curveballs. The more prepared you are, the more fun you’ll have.
