10 ways travel insurance protects travelers

Clients often ask if they should add travel insurance to their packages.  Did you know that you can add travel insurance from the travel provider (i.e. Disney, Universal, Cruise lines, etc) or you could also get a separate third party travel insurance package.  The coverage you need depends on your individual needs, and I'm happy to help you find the best coverage for you.  In the end, I want to make sure your vacation is protected - you are investing your hard earned money into your vacation, you want to get the most out of it.

1.  Travel can be more complex than you think.
Even if you are not traveling very far from home, your trip may include a long list of inclusions.  You may have multiple flights, packaged tours, rental cars, hotel stays and concert tickets.  Even if you aren't far from home, one slip on the sidewalk may land you in an ER in an unfamiliar city and uncertainty with what is covered.

2.  Flight delays and cancellations do happen.
Statistics show that over 18 percent of all flights experience delays.  Some flights are even cancelled.  Having travel insurance may cover you when you miss a connecting flight, need to stay overnight to catch a new flight the next day, sometimes even meal charges can be covered, depending on the coverage you have.  If you don't have travel insurance, you are at the mercy of the airlines to provide alternate transportation for you when a flight is cancelled or delayed.  Whether or not you make it to your planned vacation is not their top priority when dealing with hundreds of other people in the same boat.

3.  Non refundable components may be at risk.
Non refundable components like prepaid event reservations, concert tickets, special event tickets and more can be covered under specific circumstances. Many times if you don't have travel insurance, all of those items become a 'tough luck' type situation.

4.  Tourists can be more noticeable than you think.
Even if you aren't wearing a fanny pack and giant camera hung around your neck, tourists are obvious to people trying to take advantage of your distractions.  In a flash, valuables can vanish.  With a travel insurance plan, if your belongings go missing due to a covered reason, you may be able to receive compensation for your losses.

5.  Accidents can happen anywhere.
Accidents truly can happen anywhere.  A fender bender or more serious accident don't only happen close to home.  Unexpected slips and falls resulting in you needing medical care are also possibilities.  Some travel insurance policies may cover medical emergencies.  Some don't cover the medical emergencies, butt hey may protect trip interruptions caused by a covered injury or illness.  Sometimes your personal medical insurance doesn't cover you outside your typical network area.

6.  Travel suppliers can have issues
Sometimes, things happen that are out of the hands of the supplier.  The weather may result in a cancelled cruise or special event.  You may be able to be reimbursed by the supplier, but some other elements like airline tickets or pre-booked tours may not be covered.  Some travel insurance policies can help protect some of these losses, with the right plan.

7.  Luggage may wander
Even though the rates of lost baggage is slowing down, luggage still goes missing sometimes.  It may take a couple days to reach you while you are on your trip - meanwhile you have only had the clothes on your back and maybe one change of clothes from your carry-on to get you through.  With many travel protection policies, you can receive reimbursement for the items you've had to replace.

8.  Mother nature may not cooperate
Weather can be unpredictable.  When you have a travel protection plan, this can come to the rescue when trips are interrupted or cancelled by a surprise tropical storm.  When an airline or travel supplier has to suspend service due to severe weather, your travel protection plan will help.   If you are traveling during Hurricane season, it's best to purchase your travel protection plan early.  Keep in mind that a tropical storm/Hurricane cannot have been named prior to purchasing the travel protection plan for it to be valid for most travel insurance policies.

9.  Personal plans may change.
You may have to cancel or change your plans because of a major family emergency.  Depending on the situation, travel insurance can help protect both the deposit and the fully paid vacation.

10. Peace of mind is priceless
One of the best benefits to travel insurance for domestic trips is 24 hour assistance.  No matter what the situation is, someone is available for you to call and speak with directly regarding your problem.  No matter what time zone you are in, there is someone available for you to call.
