Are you ready for the Real ID Act?

In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act, which set forth recommendations for set standards for identification.  What you need to know, is that ID cards must meet minimum standards for a person to use to:
  • access federal facilities
  • board a federally regulated aircraft
  • enter a nuclear power plant.
This all meant that states had to go through changes to make their identification compliant.  For some states, the regular Driver's License don't currently meet requirements - but there are alternatives available that will satisfy them.

After several extensions, the final enforcement deadline is October 1, 2020.  This means we are less than a year away from that deadline.  At that time, if your ID is not Real ID Compliant, you will not be allowed to enter a security checkpoint at the airport, and you will not able to board your flight.

Right now, you can fly domestically with your regular state issued ID, even if it is not Real ID compliant.  If you need to fly Internationally, additional Identification is required, like a Passport.  If you are going on a Cruise that starts and ends in the US (closed loop), a Passport is not required, but heavily recommended.  If you were cruising and had to take an emergency flight home from a different country, you would be required to have a passport to fly home.
